Passive solutions rely on conduction and convection, making them ideal for noiseless or energy-limited designs. Common materials include aluminium (lightweight, affordable) and copper (higher thermal conductivity). Attach methods: clip-on, screw, adhesive pad, or thermal tape.

Choose a heatsink with equal or lower R than your calculation for reliable operation.
Fans and blowers are staples for microcontrollers, 3D printer controllers, switching power supplies, and micro-PCs. Their main job is to increase the rate of air exchange across devices or heatsinks. When evaluating fans in a South African context, consider:
For demanding power electronics, SBC clusters, or RF testers, liquid or hybrid cooling becomes necessary. These systems, including closed-loop pump-radiator coolers and Peltier (thermoelectric) devices, offer much higher transfer rates. However, they add complexity-plan for tubing, reservoirs, and sometimes mains water safety considerations. These are less common in hobby and student work, but worth considering for high-humidity or load scenarios.
Say your voltage regulator will dissipate 8W max, and you want a max case temp of 85 degreesC. With a worst-case ambient of 40 degreesC, you'd need:
R = (85 degreesC - 40 degreesC) / 8W ~ 5.6 degreesC/W
Choose a heatsink rated at or below 5.6 degreesC/W (plenty in the 4-6 degreesC/W range are usually available at local suppliers).
