A heat sink is a passive device made from thermally conductive material (usually aluminium or copper) that increases surface area to dissipate heat to ambient air. They have no moving parts, are quiet, and are widely used on power semiconductors, linear regulators, and small single-board computers when airflow is available.
Fans force air movement across components or heat sinks, increasing convective heat transfer. Fans are used when passive cooling alone cannot keep junction temperatures within safe operating limits or when compact enclosures restrict natural convection.

Thermal design uses the thermal resistance chain: component junction -> case -> heat sink -> ambient. A key relationship is similar to Ohm's law but for heat:
DeltaT = P x Rth (where DeltaT is temperature rise in °C, P is power in watts, and Rth is thermal resistance in °C/W). Example: a 2 W regulator with a heat sink Rth of 15 °C/W gives DeltaT = 2 x 15 = 30 °C above ambient.
Use this step-by-step approach: estimate dissipation, choose allowable DeltaT, calculate required Rth, and pick components. Example scenario for South African student lab: a linear voltage regulator drops 12V to 5V at 0.5A, dissipating P = (12-5) x 0.5 = 3.5 W.
If ambient is 30°C and maximum junction temperature is 125°C, and total package-to-sink resistance is 2°C/W, allowable rise is 125 - 30 = 95°C. Total Rth_allowed = 95 / 3.5 = 27.1 °C/W. Subtract package-to-sink resistance (2°C/W), leaving heat sink Rth of ~25 °C/W. That is achievable with a small finned aluminium sink in free air.
If space or enclosure restricts convection and the same device runs inside a sealed box, effective ambient near the device can be higher. Using a small 40mm or 60mm fan can reduce the heat sink Rth by 2-10x depending on airflow.
