A thermal fuse acts as a critical safety backup in many South African water heaters (geysers and instant units). It's designed to disconnect power if temperatures exceed a safe threshold, preventing overheating and potential damage or fire. Unlike a circuit breaker, a thermal fuse reacts specifically to temperature, not just electrical faults.
In most household and small commercial water heaters, the thermal fuse is either inserted inline with the heating element or built into the thermostat. If your heater suddenly stops heating and the element tests as intact, a blown thermal fuse is often the culprit.
