Where T_{junction} is your semiconductor's max safe temp (see datasheet),
P_{dissipated} is power in watts (W),
and R_{ja} (junction-to-ambient) is total thermal resistance ( degreesC/W).
For example, a regulator dissipating 2W with a total R_{ja} of 25 degreesC/W and a room temperature of 28 degreesC:
T_{junction} = 28 + 2 x 25 = 78 degreesC. Stay below the part's max rating (typically 125-150 degreesC for most ICs).
