Selecting the right cooling solution for your design means balancing size, airflow, and budget. For high-power MOSFETs and regulators, large finned heatsinks with solid surface contact and thermal paste are recommended. For microcontroller boards (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi), compact adhesive or clip-on heatsinks greatly reduce thermal throttling. Enclosure builds often combine fans and thermal pads for optimal airflow and contact transfer.
You have a D2PAK voltage regulator dissipating 10W during operation. To keep its junction temperature under 100 degreesC (with 25 degreesC ambient), calculate required heatsink thermal resistance (Rth):
