Not all heat sinks are equal. The correct choice requires matching the component's heat output and operational environment. In South Africa, ambient temperatures can vary significantly-from air-conditioned labs to unventilated factory floors-so buy with some thermal margin in mind.

Power Dissipation: Calculate component heat (in watts)
Maximum Allowable Temperature: Reference the device datasheet (typically 85-150 degreesC)
Ambient Temperature: Consider likely highs (25-35 degreesC in SA summer)
Mounting Space: Check board/enclosure clearance and airflow

Thermal Calculations: Sizing Your Heat Sink

Thermal resistance (, measured in degreesC/W) defines how well a heat sink can dissipate power. Lower values mean higher efficiency. Estimate as follows:

1. Determine Power Dissipation:
Power lost as heat (P) = Voltage drop x Current
Example: For a 7805 regulator dropping 12V to 5V at 0.5A: P = (12V - 5V) x 0.5A = 3.5W
2. Calculate Required _SA (sink-to-ambient):
_SA = (T_max - T_ambient - _JC x P) / P
Where:
T_max = max allowed part temp (e.g., 125 degreesC for 7805 IC)
T_ambient = local air temp (e.g., 30 degreesC)
_JC = junction-to-case resistance (from datasheet; e.g., 5 degreesC/W)

Worked Example (South Africa):
7805 regulator in a chassis, 0.5A load, ambient 32 degreesC (summer). Max IC temp 125 degreesC. Datasheet _JC = 5 degreesC/W.

P = 3.5W (from above)
T_max - T_ambient = 125 - 32 = 93 degreesC
_SA = (93 - (5 x 3.5)) / 3.5 = (93 - 17.5)/3.5 ~ 21.6 degreesC/W

In this case, a stamped or small extruded aluminium heat sink with _SA <= 21 degreesC/W is suitable-check the exact rating on product specs.

Mounting & Application Techniques

Apply thermal paste or pad between sink and component for optimal contact
Screw, clip, or adhesive attachment based on vibration/environment
Orient fins vertically when possible for convection
In enclosures, ensure at least minimal airflow-don't block escape paths with cables or PCBs

Troubleshooting Common Heat Sink Issues

Component still overheating? Double-check thermal resistance calculations, improve airflow, or size up sink
Poor contact/thermal transfer: Add or replace thermal paste/pad; securely fix the sink
Physical fit issues: Measure before ordering-South African PCBs and enclosures may be metric-sized
