A heat sink is a thermal management device designed to absorb and dissipate heat away from sensitive electronic components. Commonly used on CPUs, voltage regulators, MOSFETs, and high-power LEDs, heat sinks help prevent overheating and prolong the lifespan of circuits in both hobbyist and industrial builds across South Africa.
The core function of a heat sink is to increase the surface area over which heat can be transferred to the surrounding air. It achieves this by using metal fins or pins to spread thermal energy, allowing for more efficient cooling-especially when paired with forced airflow (such as a fan).
Heat sinks operate on three key physical principles:
When you mount a heat sink (sometimes using thermal paste or adhesive pads), it ensures close coupling for efficient conduction. Airflow-often via a fan or natural convection-removes heat from the fins into the ambient air. Aluminium is favoured in South African manufacturing for its balance of cost, weight, and thermal performance. Copper offers superior heat transfer but is heavier and more expensive, used where high efficiency is critical.
The most important measure of heat sink performance is thermal resistance (expressed in degreesC/W): the lower this value, the better a heat sink can move heat from component to air. When choosing a model, you'll want a thermal resistance rating lower than your component's temperature rise limit allows.
The temperature rise (T) is governed by:

Where P is power in watts, and R is thermal resistance ( degreesC/W). Example:
