R_required = 40°C / 12 W = 3.33 °C/W
Select a heat sink with thermal resistance lower than 3.33 °C/W including allowance for interface resistance. If a chosen aluminium extrusion is rated ~2.5 °C/W in forced convection with a small fan, it provides margin. Estimate additional junction-to-case losses from the component datasheet and adjust accordingly.
Forced airflow can dramatically reduce thermal resistance. Fan choice is guided by airflow (CFM), static pressure for restricted paths, noise, and expected MTBF. For many industrial enclosures a small 40-80 mm fan providing 10-30 CFM can halve thermal resistance compared to natural convection in compact assemblies.
