Choosing a suitable heat sink depends on balanced consideration of power dissipation, available space, and mounting method.
Sizing a heat sink involves estimating the power (in watts) the device will dissipate and selecting a sink with an appropriate temperature rise. Use:
T = P x Rth where T is temperature rise ( degreesC), P is power dissipated in W, Rth is thermal resistance ( degreesC/W).
Example: If a voltage regulator in a convection oven dissipates 10W and you wish to keep its temperature below 85 degreesC (with ambient at 25 degreesC), you'll need:
Check the Rth of shortlisted heat sinks against this value. For forced-air (fan) appliances, a slightly higher Rth may suffice.
