Start by estimating your project's power dissipation. For instance, a linear regulator dropping 24V to 5V at 500mA dissipates (24V-5V)x0.5A = 9.5W. Next, check the datasheet's maximum junction temperature and the ambient conditions-South African climates can be warm, especially in unventilated garages or labs.
Suppose you have a 10W dissipation and want to keep your IC below 85 degreesC in an ambient of 25 degreesC. The maximum allowable thermal resistance is calculated as:
