Example: Power MOSFET in an Inverter

Suppose you have a MOSFET dissipating 7W, rated T_j,max=150 degreesC, R_{th_jc}=1.2 degreesC/W, using thermal paste R_{th_cs}=0.5 degreesC/W, and T_a,max=40 degreesC:

R_{th_heatsink} = (150-40)/7 - (1.2+0.5) = 15.71-1.7 = 14.01 degreesC/W

You'll select a heatsink at or below 14 degreesC/W, with extra margin if airflow is poor or dust build-up is likely. In practice, choose a heatsink with lower R_th for reliability, especially if ambient temps can trend higher.
