Thermal fuses (sometimes called thermal cutoffs or thermal links) are single-use safety devices that open a circuit when a specified temperature is exceeded. Knowing what to consider when selecting thermal fuses helps South African makers, students, technicians and procurement teams choose components that fit their application, supply chain constraints and safety needs without over- or under-specifying the device.

While specific regulatory claims are excluded unless on a datasheet, engineers should verify datasheet test conditions when comparing parts. Two practical calculations often used when selecting thermal fuses relate to heating power and derating for ambient temperature.
If a resistive component dissipates power P (watts), use the temperature rise and thermal resistance of the assembly to estimate whether the chosen fuse will see the expected temperature. Basic electrical relationships still apply: Ohm's law and power calculations are useful for worst-case current scenarios:
V = I × R (Volts = Current × Resistance)
P = V × I = I^2 × R (Power in watts)
Example: a small heater draws 2 A at 12 V, so P = 24 W. If that heater is enclosed and can raise local temperature above ambient, select a thermal fuse with a rated temperature safely below the component's damage threshold but above normal operating temperature.
Typical wiring for an inline single-use thermal fuse on a DC heater element:
+12V -----[ thermal fuse ]----- heater element ----- GND
Use insulated leads rated above the expected trip temperature and secure mechanical strain relief so vibration or movement doesn't fatigue the fuse leads.
