A thermal fuse is a single-use, heat-sensitive safety component designed to break a circuit permanently when a specified temperature is exceeded. Unlike a resettable thermal switch, a thermal fuse must be replaced after it "blows" or opens, so lifespan is a key maintenance concern for both end-users and service technicians. Because thermal fuses are irreversibly destroyed when triggered, planned replacement intervals are not typically scheduled. Nonetheless, in high-reliability or mission-critical South African facilities, some maintenance teams do opt to preemptively replace fuses every 8-10 years.
Choosing the right thermal fuse goes beyond matching temperature ratings. Use these steps for optimal protection and durability:
If your application's normal highest temperature is 100 degreesC, do not use a 100 degreesC fuse. For fuse longevity, select a rated temperature at least 15-20 degreesC higher than the peak operating temperature, unless stricter safety requirements dictate otherwise.
Example: For a 100 degreesC normal max, choose a 115-120 degreesC rated fuse for long life. If you select a 105 degreesC fuse, regular operation will degrade it faster-even if never tripped.
