A thermal interface material (TIM) is a specially formulated substance placed between two surfaces - typically an electronic component (CPU, power transistor, MOSFET) and a heatsink or enclosure - to improve heat transfer. TIMs fill microscopic air gaps and surface irregularities that trap heat, reducing thermal resistance and lowering operating temperatures. Manufacturers give several key numbers: thermal conductivity (W/m·K), thermal resistance (often in K/W for a given thickness), and recommended bond line thickness (BLT). When deciding what is a thermal interface material for your project, compare thermal conductivity, application method, electrical conductivity, operating temperature range, and mechanical properties. Consider reworkability and cleanliness for student labs and prototyping.
Use this simple formula to estimate junction temperature rise:
Rth_interface = DeltaT / P where Rth is thermal resistance between device and heatsink (K/W), DeltaT is allowed temperature rise (K), and P is power dissipation (W).
Example: a power regulator dissipates 5 W and you want less than 20 K rise between regulator case and heatsink. Rth_interface = 20 / 5 = 4 K/W. Choose a TIM and assembly that gives combined interface resistance below this figure.
Practical note: locally sourced TIMs and heatsinks can vary in packaging sizes. For single-project use, small syringes of paste or pre-cut pads are cost-effective. For workshop stocking, larger tubes and sheets may be more economical. Prices for common pastes often range from about ZAR 40-250 depending on brand and volume; these are estimates and subject to stock and supplier availability.
When matching TIM to heatsinks and components, check recommended BLT and whether the TIM is electrically conductive. Typical accessory bundles for power electronics include thermal paste, a small heatsink, mounting screws or thermal adhesive, and thermal pads for peripherals.
