Thermal interface materials (TIMs) are materials placed between heat-generating components (CPUs, power MOSFETs, LEDs, power supplies) and heat spreaders or sinks to improve heat transfer across microscopic gaps. Choosing the right TIM reduces junction temperatures, improves reliability and can allow smaller, quieter cooling solutions-important for South African makers, tertiary projects and small-scale production runs.
When comparing TIMs, several specifications matter: thermal conductivity (reported in W/m·K), thermal resistance (Rth, often in °C/W for a given interface thickness), operating temperature range, electrical conductivity (some pastes are electrically conductive), viscosity/softness, and ease of application. For many hobby and education projects, thermal conductivity and whether the material is electrically insulating are the top priorities.

A key practical calculation is thermal resistance across the TIM: Rth = DeltaT / P, where DeltaT is the allowed temperature rise (°C) and P is power dissipated (W). You can also estimate Rth from material properties: Rth = thickness / (k · area), where k is thermal conductivity (W/m·K).
Example: an LED dissipates 3 W. You allow a 20°C rise between die and heat sink. Required interface Rth = 20 / 3 = 6.67 °C/W. If using a pad with k = 2 W/m·K and area 2 cm x 2 cm (0.0004 m2), the thickness giving that Rth would be thickness = Rth · k · area = 6.67 · 2 · 0.0004 = 0.0053 m (5.3 mm) - showing that pad thickness and area strongly influence real-world performance.
