Thermal paste (thermal compound, thermal grease, TIM) is a thermally conductive material applied between a heat-generating component and its heatsink or enclosure. The primary benefit of thermal paste is to reduce thermal resistance by filling microscopic air gaps between mating surfaces, improving heat flow from the device to the cooling solution. For makers, students and technicians in South Africa, using the right thermal paste improves reliability, reduces throttling in processors, and helps power components run cooler under load.
Metal and ceramic surfaces look flat but have microscopic pits that trap air, an excellent thermal insulator. Select thermal paste by balancing thermal conductivity, electrical properties, viscosity (ease of spreading), and operating temperature. For student labs and prototyping, choose non-electrically conductive, mid-range conductivity compounds for safety and ease of use. For performance-sensitive applications-e.g., overclocked systems or high-current MOSFETs-consider higher conductivity pastes but take precautions to avoid shorts on exposed leads.
Correct application ensures optimal benefit. Use a pea-sized or thin line of paste for CPUs and spread evenly under the heatsink by applying pressure when seating. For flat power devices, a thin, uniform layer is best. Avoid thick layers: thermal resistance increases with thickness. A practical rule-of-thumb for flat interfaces is to aim for a bond line thickness of around 50-100 micrometres where possible.
Use Ohm's law for thermal circuits analogy: Temperature rise (°C) = Power (W) × Thermal resistance (°C/W). If a regulator dissipates 5 W and the thermal interface + heatsink thermal resistance is 5 °C/W, estimated junction-to-ambient rise = 5 W × 5 °C/W = 25 °C. Improving the interface with better thermal paste could reduce the interface resistance by 0.5 °C/W, lowering rise by 2.5 °C-useful in hot South African ambient temperatures where every degree affects reliability.
Example 1 - Raspberry Pi cluster: use a thin layer of non-conductive ceramic paste under each CPU and small aluminium heatsinks. Several 1-3 g tubes are enough for a multi-board setup. Example 2 - MOSFET heatsinking in motor controller: choose a higher conductivity paste (check electrical properties) and apply evenly between MOSFET tab and heatsink, using insulating pads if tabs are exposed.
