Intermittent signals or devices that work only after flexing the cable.
Incorrect pin mapping - functions swapped between adjacent pins.
Open circuits (no continuity) on one or more conductors.
Shorts between adjacent conductors.

Quick visual checklist

Connector seating: ensure IDC connector sits squarely on the header and clips (if present) engage.
Orientation: confirm pin 1 alignment; many cables have a red stripe denoting conductor 1.
Crush or cuts: look along the cable for kinks, cuts or exposed conductors.
Corrosion or dirt: inspect contacts; corrosion in South African coastal or humid environments can increase contact resistance.

Use your multimeter in continuity mode to verify each conductor from one end of the FRXCF16 to the other. For a 16-way cable, test conductors 1-16 in order. Mark any open or shorted conductors before further action.

Board side (header) is the mirror image when mated. Always verify pin 1 markers on both cable and board.

When in doubt, use continuity between each wire and a labelled breakout or known test point to confirm function.
For ribbon-to-dupont conversions, test each new pin to avoid shifted indexing (off-by-one errors).

Fixes for common faults

Open conductor at IDC crimp

If continuity fails on a conductor near the crimp, the IDC may have not displaced insulation fully or the conductor may be broken. Options:

Re-terminate: remove the IDC and re-crimp using the correct tool and a replacement IDC housing.
Splice and solder: cut back to good wire, solder, insulate with heat-shrink and re-terminate if space allows.
Replace the cable: for multiple failures or aged assemblies, replacement is cheaper and more reliable.

Intermittent contact or high resistance

Intermittency often appears when the cable is flexed. Steps:

Wiggle test while monitoring continuity to localise the fault.
Inspect for corrosion; clean contacts with isopropyl alcohol if dirty and re-test.
Consider pigtailing the suspect conductor to a new connector if the break is near an end.

Shorts between conductors

Shorts typically come from insulation damage, solder bridges, or crushed cable. Repair options:

Identify the shorted pair, cut out the damaged section and re-join remaining wires with correct insulation.
Use insulating tape or heat-shrink to isolate nearby conductors after repair.

Advanced diagnostics and test fixtures

For repeated testing or production debugging, build a simple test jig that maps each ribbon conductor to labelled LEDs or a small logic analyser. A breadboard breakout can help verify signal integrity and timing. When working with high-speed signals, visual inspection and continuity are not enough; consider scope checks for signal distortion or crosstalk.
