Start by defining the maximum voltage and continuous current your circuit will see. Choose a device with at least 25-50% margin on blocking voltage and a comfortable margin on RMS current. For inductive loads, check the surge (ITSM) and di/dt ratings.
If you need bidirectional control on AC mains, a TRIAC rated for the mains voltage and expected load current is appropriate. For controlled rectification or DC switching, use SCRs in series or with appropriate snubbers.
Choose gate-drive components that can deliver the gate trigger current IG at the required voltage. For sensitive gates, low-current drivers or optocouplers simplify isolation. For higher-power SCRs, a dedicated gate driver or transformer coupling may be required.

Use the device's thermal resistance and your expected power dissipation to size heat sinks. As a rule: P = Vdrop * I. Example: a thyristor dropping 1.5 V at 20 A dissipates 30 W and needs a suitable heatsink. For multi-device banks consider forced air or larger surfaces.
