In practice, many South African appliances and OEMs use both: a resettable switch for regular cycling and a cutoff as a non-resettable backup for dangerous temperatures.
If you need a device to reset automatically (like for recurring appliance over-temp events), choose a thermal switch. For non-resettable, fail-safe protection, use a thermal cutoff in series with your load.
Match the rated temperature to your device's safe operating limits. For example, a 120 degreesC disc switch may suit a transformer, while a 192 degreesC cutoff is typical in kettle elements.
Thermal switches come as bolt-on discs, clip-ons for pipes, or inline wire types. Cutoffs must sit in thermal contact with the monitored device, often secured with sleeves or soldered in.
