For most home electric water heaters, NTC thermistors with 10k or 12k resistance values (at 25 degreesC) are the standard. For solar/geyser controllers or commercial boilers, PT100/1000 RTDs may be specified for improved stability or longer cable runs. For a typical geyser control circuit using an NTC thermistor, a resistor divider provides an analog voltage proportional to water temperature. Calibration is essential. The steinhart-hart equation models NTC behaviour:
1/T = A + B*ln(R) + C*[ln(R)]^3Where T is temperature in Kelvin, R is thermistor resistance, and A/B/C are constants (from the datasheet). For PT100 sensors, the output is linear and often requires a current source for accurate readings, especially over long cabling runs-a common scenario in industrial or multi-story blocks in South Africa.
Suppose a geyser uses a 10kOhm NTC thermistor at 25 degreesC. If measured resistance at 60 degreesC is ~4.2kOhm (see product datasheet), use an inline resistance-to-voltage converter to integrate with a microcontroller (e.g., Arduino or ESP32).
