1. Estimate Power Dissipation: Use datasheet maximums for ICs, MOSFETs, or LEDs. Power loss (W) = I2R (for resistive loads) or Vf x I (for diodes/LEDs).
2. Calculate Temperature Rise: T = P x Rth, where Rth is the total thermal resistance of your cooling system. Add ambient temperature (Tamb) to check if the component stays below its max rated value.
3. Select Heat Sinks and Fans: If the calculated temperature is too high, reduce Rth by choosing a larger heat sink or adding a fan. For example, in a Pretoria lab with 32 degreesC ambient, a TO-220 device dissipating 5W with a 15 degreesC/W sink will rise 75 degreesC - potentially over safe limits; a better heat sink or fan is needed.
