Suppose you have a linear regulator dissipating 3W in a media player enclosure. If the max ambient temperature is 35 degreesC and the component safe max is 105 degreesC, the required total thermal resistance from junction to ambient is:
ja = (Tmax - Tambient) / P = (105 - 35) / 3 = 23.3 degreesC/W
Subtract the regulator's internal thermal resistance (from datasheet, say 5 degreesC/W), so the heatsink must be <18.3 degreesC/W. Choose a commercially available heatsink rated for 15-18 degreesC/W, accounting for some margin.
