LEDs deliver efficient, long-lasting light-but only when heat is properly managed. Without effective thermal solutions, LED junction temperatures quickly rise, causing brightness loss, colour shift, efficiency drops, or even premature failure. In South African climates, with high ambient temperatures and limited cooling airflow in some installations, careful thermal design is even more critical for students, makers, and professional engineers.
Several thermal solutions are widely used in LED circuits, from simple low-power strip lighting to high-brightness commercial floodlights. Selection depends on drive current, board layout, enclosure size, and airflow limitations.

When choosing and applying thermal management, the following parameters matter most:
Standard specifications for LED modules and heatsinks typically include mounting details, interface finish, allowed torque, and maximum recommended Rth (thermal resistance). Refer to the datasheets of both LEDs (e.g., from Cree, Luxeon, or Osram) and heatsink/TIM manufacturers.
A typical calculation helps size a heatsink for your LED:
Calculate power dissipated as heat:
P = Vf x I = 3.2V x 0.7A = 2.24W
Determine maximum allowable total thermal resistance from junction to ambient:
Rth,total = (Tj,max - Ta)/P = (110 degreesC - 30 degreesC) / 2.24W ~ 35.7 degreesC/W
Subtract the LED's internal thermal resistance (see datasheet, e.g., 6 degreesC/W), leaving about 29.7 degreesC/W for the heatsink and interface. Select a heatsink rated <=29 degreesC/W and use thermal pads/grease for best results.
