Thermal interface materials (TIMs) bridge microscopic gaps between heat sources (ICs, power transistors, MOSFETs) and heatsinks or enclosures to improve heat flow. In South African workshops and labs, selecting the right TIM can reduce operating temperature, improve reliability and avoid thermal throttling. When evaluating TIMs, the most useful specs are thermal conductivity, thermal resistance (Rth), thickness, electrical conductivity, operating temperature range and mechanical properties (compliance, tack). Thermal conductivity is reported in W/mK; higher is generally better, but installation and contact pressure also strongly affect real-world performance.

Estimate junction or case temperature rise using a series thermal-resistance model. For a device dissipating P watts:
T_rise = P * R_th_total
Where R_th_total = R_th_jc + R_th_TIM + R_th_sink + R_th_ambient. R_th_TIM depends on thickness (L) and thermal conductivity (k):
R_th_TIM = L / (k * A)
Example (South Africa context): a power transistor dissipates 5 W, mounted to a small aluminium heatsink with contact area A = 1 cm2 (0.0001 m2). Using a thermal pad of thickness 0.5 mm (0.0005 m) and k = 3 W/mK:
R_th_TIM = 0.0005 / (3 * 0.0001) = 1.67 K/W; T_rise_TIM = 5 * 1.67 = 8.35 K
This shows that reducing thickness or increasing area materially improves performance. For student projects, aim for contact areas >1 cm2 for components dissipating several watts, or use a higher-conductivity TIM.

Correct application matters as much as TIM selection. For thermal paste: apply a thin, even layer to avoid air pockets and excess squeeze-out. For pads: ensure surfaces are clean, flat and pressed with uniform pressure. For tape or adhesive, follow cure times and surface prep recommendations.
Example 1 - Student Raspberry Pi cluster (low power, many boards): thin thermal pads for Raspberry Pi (1-2 W/mK) under each SoC give repeatable assembly and easy replacement during experiments. Example 2 - Power amplifier in an audio lab (10-30 W): choose a high-conductivity paste or metal-filled pad and ensure a large heatsink area; calculate R_th as shown earlier to estimate temperature rise in Celsius (K).
