The Sonoff M5 is a Wi-Fi smart wall switch that runs on the ESP32 platform. That matters for integration because it supports eWeLink, the native app, but also exposes local control options that most closed smart switches do not. In my own test bench setup in Centurion, I have used the M5 as the primary wall controller for a mix of local and cloud-connected devices. The key is understanding that the M5 is a switching device, not a hub. It does not have Zigbee or Z-Wave radios, so it cannot directly talk to battery-powered sensors or Zigbee bulbs. Its job is to switch mains loads and publish state changes to your chosen platform.
The most common integration paths are:
A critical limitation for South African users: load shedding. If your Wi-Fi router and internet connection drop during an outage, cloud-dependent integrations stop working. I strongly recommend designing your M5 setup so that basic switching remains functional without internet. That means using the physical button, or better, setting up local automation with Home Assistant and a UPS for your router and home server. The M5 will remember its last state or revert to a configured power-on state after a power interruption, which is a setting you can change in the eWeLink app.
Practical tip: Before you commit to any integration, check whether the devices you want to link support local control. Cloud-only devices will become unreliable during load shedding unless you have backup power for your internet gateway and a local hub like Home Assistant.
To integrate the M5 with other smart devices, you need to establish the control layer first. Here is the minimum kit I would assemble for a typical South African home or maker workspace:
If you are building a larger system, consider using the M5 as a wall switch for lighting circuits and pairing it with smart plugs for plug-in loads. That way you do not need to hardwire every device. Smart plugs from brands like Sonoff, Shelly, and TP-Link are widely available locally and work well with the M5 through platform-level automations.
The M5 does not have a Zigbee radio, so it cannot directly bind to Zigbee sensors. However, through a hub like Home Assistant or SmartThings, you can create automations that trigger the M5 based on sensor events. For example, a Zigbee motion sensor can trigger the M5 to turn on a light. The M5 acts as the actuator, not the sensor.
If you use smart bulbs (Philips Hue, Yeelight, Tuya), you have two options: keep the M5 always on and control the bulb via its own app, or use the M5 to switch the bulb on/off and set the bulb to always-on mode. The first approach gives you dimming and colour control; the second gives you physical switch behaviour. I prefer the first for living areas, and the second for utility areas where colour is unnecessary. Just remember: if the M5 cuts power to a smart bulb, the bulb will reboot and may default to full brightness. That can be jarring at 2 AM.
Wireless buttons and remotes (Sonoff SNZB-01, Aqara Mini Switch) can be integrated via a Zigbee hub. You can then program the M5 to toggle when the button is pressed. This is useful for adding a second control point without running new switch wires. For temperature and humidity monitoring, a Zigbee sensor paired with Home Assistant can trigger the M5 to switch on a heater or fan via a smart plug.
Google Home and Amazon Alexa both support eWeLink. You can link your eWeLink account and control the M5 by voice. Apple Home does not natively support eWeLink, but you can expose the M5 to Apple Home via Home Assistant's HomeKit bridge. This is a popular route for iPhone users who want local control and Siri voice commands. The setup requires a always-on Home Assistant instance.

South Africa's electricity situation makes local control non-negotiable for many. A smart home that depends entirely on cloud servers and internet connectivity will fail during outages. Here is how I structure M5 automations for resilience:
A practical example: In my workshop, a Sonoff M5 controls the main lighting circuit. A Zigbee motion sensor in the corridor triggers the M5 via Home Assistant, but only between 6 PM and 6 AM. If the internet drops, the motion sensor and M5 still communicate locally through the Zigbee coordinator and Home Assistant. The only thing lost is remote control from my phone when I am away. That is an acceptable trade-off.
For those who prefer a simpler setup without a home server, the eWeLink cloud works fine for basic schedules and voice control. Just be aware that during load shedding, if your router is not on backup power, you lose remote access and schedules may not execute. The M5 will still function as a manual switch.
The same process applies to Alexa: enable the eWeLink skill in the Alexa app. Note that both platforms rely on the cloud, so internet outages will disable voice control. Local voice control is possible with Home Assistant's Assist feature, but that requires additional setup.
For makers who want complete local control and no cloud dependency, flashing the M5 with Tasmota or ESPHome is an option. This requires opening the switch, connecting a USB-to-serial adapter to the ESP32's UART pins, and flashing the firmware. It is not for beginners. If you go this route, you gain MQTT support, full local automation, and compatibility with Home Assistant without any cloud service. You also void the warranty and risk bricking the device if you make a mistake.
If you are considering this, practice on a spare M5 first. You will need a 3.3V USB-to-serial adapter, dupont wires, and a soldering iron with fine tip.
