Single-sided boards used for through-hole components do not require plated-through holes to function, but plated holes improve reliability for repeated soldering and mechanical stresses. If you plan to ship boards for student labs or long-term service, consider requesting plated holes from your board house.
Ask whether your circuit requires crossovers or complex routing. If you can place all signal routing on one side and use jumpers sparingly, a single-sided board is the most practical choice. Otherwise consider a two-layer board.
For power circuits or high-wattage resistors, check copper weight and allow heat dissipation areas or heatsinks. Use wider traces for power rails and consider adding solder pools to increase trace thickness where necessary.

Use Ohm's law to size resistors and calculate power dissipation: V = I * R and P = V * I or P = I^2 * R. Example: an LED circuit with 20 mA at 5 V and a forward voltage of 2.0 V requires R = (5 - 2) / 0.02 = 150 ohms. Power on the resistor is P = 0.02^2 * 150 = 0.06 W, so a standard 0.25 W resistor is sufficient.
When single-layer routing requires jumpers, keep them short and insulated where they cross sensitive signals. Example top-side layout with a single jumper shown below:

Single-sided boards are ideal for hand soldering. Use flux, a temperature-controlled iron (350-380 C for most solder), and clean solder joints. For cold joints or bridges, reheat with flux and add fresh solder rather than scraping the pad.
Open traces: repair with a short jumper or conductive pen. Bad solder joints: reflow with proper flux. Incorrect footprints: add adapter wiring or remap pins on a revision.
