Thermal interface materials (TIMs) bridge the microscopic gaps between heat sources (CPUs, power MOSFETs, LED arrays) and heatsinks or enclosures to improve heat transfer. Choosing the right TIM affects junction temperatures, reliability and cooling system size. Start by identifying the thermal budget for your component - estimate dissipated power and allowable temperature rise. Use a simple thermal resistance calculation: Temperature rise (°C) = Power (W) × Thermal resistance (°C/W). Thermal resistance depends on TIM conductivity, thickness and contact area; improving contact reduces thermal resistance.
A power regulator dissipates 4 W. You want a temperature rise under 25 °C between the regulator case and heatsink. Required thermal resistance = 25 °C / 4 W = 6.25 °C/W. Choose a heatsink + TIM combination with combined thermal resistance below this value. For planning, allow extra margin for higher ambient temperatures common in some regions of South Africa.
