This section shows wiring examples for common configurations: direct 5V header fan, GPIO-controlled fan, and externally powered fan. Always power down the Pi before making connections.
Use the 5V and GND pins on the 40-pin header for steady fan power. For software-controlled fans use a GPIO pin via a transistor or MOSFET to switch the ground side. Never connect a 12V fan to the Pi header.

This is the simplest wiring. If the fan draws >250 mA, consider powering the fan from a separate 5V supply or from the Pi's USB power input rather than the 5V header.
Use an N-channel MOSFET (e.g., logic-level IRL series) or an NPN transistor to switch the fan ground. Add a flyback diode if the fan has inductive spikes, and a pull-down resistor on the GPIO to ensure it stays off at boot.

4-wire PWM fans require a dedicated PWM pin and usually expect the PWM signal at 25 kHz. Many Raspberry Pi GPIOs can do software PWM for fan-speed control, or use a simple script that toggles a GPIO based on CPU temperature readings. Example script logic: monitor /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp and switch fan on at a temperature threshold (e.g., 60°C) and off below a lower threshold (e.g., 55°C).
If a fan draws 120 mA at 5 V, power = V x I = 5 V x 0.12 A = 0.6 W. Over 24 hours that is 0.6 W x 24 h = 14.4 Wh (0.0144 kWh). At an estimated residential electricity rate of ZAR 3.00 per kWh, daily cost is 0.0144 kWh x ZAR 3.00 = ZAR 0.0432 - negligible for intermittent use. These figures are estimates; actual tariffs and draws vary by region and fan model.
A small 40mm fan moving ~2-4 CFM can reduce CPU steady-state temperature by 5-15°C depending on case ventilation and load. Combining a proper heatsink with airflow produces the best result for thermal throttling scenarios like continuous video encoding.
