Use these fundamental formulas during prototyping checks:
Example: an LED with 2.0 V forward drop on a 5 V rail drawing 20 mA needs a resistor R = (5 V - 2 V) / 0.02 A = 150 ?. Power on the resistor P = Vdrop × I = 3 V × 0.02 A = 0.06 W - a 1/4 W resistor is sufficient.

A recommended workflow: sketch schematic & bill of materials, prototype on breadboard or perfboard, measure with DMM/oscilloscope, then move to soldered perfboard or a simple PCB for final testing. For SMT designs consider a reflow oven or hot-air station for small runs.
Common faults during prototyping include loose breadboard contacts, swapped pin connections, power rail shorts and incorrect component values. Use a systematic approach: visual inspection, continuity checks with a multimeter, isolate sections of the circuit and use a scope to look for noise or unexpected waveforms.
