Choosing a suitable passive cooling device starts by estimating the heat generated by your components and matching a cooling solution with the right thermal resistance (measured in degreesC/W). Here's a simple approach:
Use this formula to estimate required thermal resistance:
Example: For a MOSFET dissipating 5W, with a max device temperature of 100 degreesC and expected ambient of 30 degreesC (common in SA workshops),
R = (100 - 30) / 5 = 14 degreesC/W. Choose a heatsink or pad with <=14 degreesC/W rating, considering your mounting setup.
