Using Ohm's Law: For a 5.6 kΩ resistor across 230 V (typical SA mains, for demonstration only), current I = V/R = 230 / 5600 ~ 0.041 A. Power P = V x I = 230 x 0.041 ~ 9.4 W - well above this resistor's 2 W rating! Always select a resistor able to dissipate more than the circuit's peak demand. MOF-2W types can safely shunt signals or act as inrush limiters when correctly sized, but verify the application calculations before use.
For installations in garages or plant rooms where ambient regularly reaches 60 degreesC, power rating should be derated. For example: If the datasheet graphs show a 60% derating at 100 degreesC, a 2W resistor safely dissipates 1.2W at that temp. Always check this when designing in bulk panel builds common in SA.
