Installing thermal pads on Raspberry Pi boards is a low-cost, low-effort way to improve heat transfer between hot components (CPU, LAN, power ICs) and heatsinks, metal cases or chassis. This guide explains how thermal pads differ from thermal paste, how to choose the right thickness and thermal conductivity, and practical steps for safe installation in South African maker, education and lab environments.
Thermal pads are solid, electrically insulating materials that compress to fill gaps between the component and heatsink. They are easier to place for small boards like the Raspberry Pi and are less messy than paste. Thermal paste offers marginally better conductivity for tightly mated surfaces but requires careful application and cleaning between swaps.
Select thermal pads based on thickness, thermal conductivity (W/m·K), compressibility and whether they are electrically insulating. For Raspberry Pi use, common choices are 0.5 mm to 2 mm thickness with 1.0-6.0 W/m·K conductivity. Thinner pads are suitable when the heatsink sits close to the chip; thicker pads help bridge larger gaps in enclosures.

Work on a clean, static-safe surface. You will need isopropyl alcohol (70%+), lint-free wipes, tweezers, a plastic card or scalpel for trimming pads, and optional thermal paste if mixing methods. Identify the SoC and other heat-generating chips on your Raspberry Pi model. Measure the gap from chip top to intended heatsink or enclosure surface. Consideration: When using metal cases, ensure thermal pads do not create unintended electrical connections between components and the case. Prefer electrically insulating pads for general use.

Power down and unplug the Raspberry Pi. Use isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free wipe to remove dust, oils or old thermal compound from the chip surface and the heatsink or case contact area.
Measure the chip footprint and cut the thermal pad slightly larger to ensure full coverage. Use tweezers to place the pad directly on the chip. Avoid stretching the pad. If your pad is thicker than needed, trim with a scalpel to match the gap.
Gently press the heatsink or case onto the pad to compress it evenly. The pad will fill micro-gaps and improve thermal contact. Tighten mounting screws or clips gradually to avoid uneven pressure.
Boot the Raspberry Pi and monitor temperatures using vcgencmd (on Raspbian-based systems) or other temperature tools. Example command: vcgencmd measure_temp. Track idle and loaded temperatures to confirm improvement.
Use a basic thermal resistance model to estimate junction-to-case temperature rise: Temperature rise (°C) = Power dissipated (W) × Thermal resistance (°C/W). For example, a Pi SoC dissipating 3W with an added thermal path Rth of 5 °C/W gives: 3 × 5 = 15°C rise above ambient. These are approximate; real-world measurements are recommended.
