Thermal fuses are critical safety components installed in electric motors to protect against overheating and prevent costly damage or fire risk. In South Africa, overheating can be caused by frequent load shedding, voltage fluctuations, dust accumulation, or continuous operation in hot environments. Fitting a thermal fuse helps disconnect the circuit permanently if unsafe temperatures are reached, without relying on resettable devices like circuit breakers.
A thermal fuse contains a pellet or alloy that melts or deforms at a specified temperature. When activated, it permanently opens the circuit, stopping current flow and protecting the motor windings. Unlike re-settable thermal switches, a thermal fuse must be replaced after activation.

Before installing, verify the following for your target motor:
Always match the trip temperature of the fuse to the maximum safe temperature for your motor but leave at least 10-20 degreesC margin below the insulation class rating. For example, for a motor with Class B insulation (130 degreesC max), consider a 120 degreesC or 125 degreesC fuse.
Suppose you are replacing a thermal fuse in a 230V AC fan motor, 220W, rated at 1.2A full load. The winding insulation is Class F (155 degreesC max).
Common models include SEFUSE SF109E (130 degreesC, 250V, 2A).
