Start by estimating power dissipation and acceptable temperature rise. Use Ohm's and power relationships for simple cases: P = V × I for measured circuits, and for resistive loads V = I × R. For semiconductors, datasheets often list junction-to-case thermal resistance. Combine thermal resistances in series: total Rth = Rth_jc + Rth_ca (junction-to-case plus case-to-ambient). These calculations guide whether passive or active cooling is required.
If a regulator dissipates 3 W and you need to keep junction temperature within safe limits with a 50°C ambient, aim for a case-to-ambient rise under 40°C. Required Rth_ca = 40°C / 3 W = 13.3 °C/W. Choose a heatsink with lower thermal resistance or add forced-air to reduce effective Rth.
