A B10 12VDC buzzer is a compact electromechanical/audio signalling device designed to produce an audible tone when powered by a 12-volt DC supply. Makers and technicians commonly use it for alarms, user feedback, timers and simple notification systems. This guide explains how to wire and drive the buzzer safely in electronics projects, shows driver circuits, gives sizing formulas, and includes South Africa-relevant notes on availability and education use.

Most B10 12VDC parts sold as industry beepers are active: they include an internal oscillator and sound at a fixed frequency when the 12V is applied. The instructions below assume the common active 12V version unless you confirm the device is a passive piezo element from the datasheet.
When sourcing a B10 12VDC buzzer in South Africa, check Communica's Electromechanical or Components collections for stock, typical lead times, and branch pickup availability (Samrand, Pretoria CBD, Cape Town). Popular maker brands and general-purpose buzzers are commonly stocked; expect ZAR 20-200 depending on features and SPL (prices vary and are indicative).
If your control signal is a clean 12V switched output capable of the buzzer's stall current, you can connect the buzzer directly to the 12V rail through your switch. However, most microcontrollers and many relay outputs are 5V or lower and cannot switch 12V directly. Use a transistor or MOSFET driver with a flyback diode where needed. Polarity matters on active buzzers. The switch must interrupt the positive rail or negative rail consistently - wiring conventionally on the positive rail is common.

Flyback diode not required for active buzzer but recommended if using inductive loads nearby
Use an logic-level N-channel MOSFET (e.g., IRL-series) or a small NPN transistor like 2N2222 with a base resistor. Add a 10k pulldown on the gate/base to keep it off during resets. If the buzzer is passive, you will need to drive with PWM from the MCU at audio frequencies and include a series resistor where required. Use simple Ohm's law to check power and component ratings. For an active B10 12VDC buzzer, you mainly need the supply current (I) and voltage (V) to calculate power (P = V x I).
If the datasheet says the buzzer draws 30 mA at 12V: P = 12 V x 0.03 A = 0.36 W. A switching MOSFET or transistor that can handle a few hundred mA and at least 1-2 W dissipation margin is sufficient. For series resistors used only for level limiting on passive elements, compute R = (V - Vbuzzer) / I. For active buzzers, resistors are rarely used in the main supply path.
Example 1: Classroom timer using Arduino and B10 12VDC buzzer components for electronic projects. Use a 12V supply, N-channel MOSFET as low-side switch and drive the buzzer with digital IO (on/off). Use a PSU capable of 500 mA (ZAR 150-200 estimate for basic 12V bench adapter) to allow other peripherals.
Example 2: Simple door-alert for a workshop. Use a 12V sealed lead-acid battery or 12V adapter and a reed switch to energise the buzzer via a transistor driver. For portable setups, account for battery capacity: a 12V 2 Ah battery provides ~2000 mAh; a 30 mA buzzer draws 0.03 A so run-time theoretical ~66 hours (real-life lower due to inefficiencies).
