Thermal fuses are single-trip devices. Compared with thermostats (resetting) and PTC/NTC thermistors (temperature-dependent resistance), thermal fuses provide a definitive open-circuit at an over-temperature event. Use them where a non-resetting, tamper-evident safety action is required.

Measure or estimate the highest stable temperature near the fuse under normal conditions (including ambient temperature, enclosure heating, and nearby hot components). Choose a thermal fuse temperature rating at least 10-20°C above that value to prevent nuisance opens.
Select a fuse with a continuous current rating above the circuit's steady-state current. For loads with high inrush (motors, capacitive supplies), check datasheets or choose a higher-rated fuse; where appropriate combine with an inrush limiter or a separate current fuse.
Ensure the voltage rating suits your AC mains (230 VAC in South Africa typical) or DC systems. For humid or dusty environments, consider sealed packages or protective mounting to reduce corrosion risk.

A small heater draws 0.8 A at 230 VAC. Steady-state current is 0.8 A; choose a thermal fuse with continuous current rating above 0.8 A (for example 1.5 A or greater) and a temperature rating above normal heater surface temperature. If the heater housing reaches 80°C in use, select a thermal fuse rated ~95-110°C depending on proximity and safety margin.
A 12 V DC supply provides 2 A. If the supply components run at 60°C in operation, choose a thermal fuse rated at least 10-20°C higher. Confirm the fuse's voltage rating covers the maximum DC voltage and consider combined thermal and current protection strategies.

Install thermal fuses in series with the live conductor feeding the heat source. Verify continuity with a multimeter before installation and confirm expected circuit temperatures under normal load using an infrared thermometer or thermocouple.
If a thermal fuse has operated (opened), replace it with the same temperature and electrical ratings.
