A thermal cutoff switch (TCO) is a critical safety component in a wide range of electronic equipment- from power supplies, transformers, and motor windings to appliances and industrial control systems. Its role is to disconnect the circuit if temperatures become dangerously high, preventing fire hazards and costly damage. In South African contexts, TCOs are common in both domestic and industrial equipment due to our warm climate and challenging power grid conditions.
A TCO is typically a non-resettable device that features a heat-sensitive organic pellet or alloy which melts at a specific temperature, causing an internal spring to break the connection. Once the cutoff activates (trips), the only fix is to replace it with a new, correctly rated component.

Protective glasses and ESD precautions are strongly recommended, especially for students and technical staff working in shared lab spaces.
Set your multimeter to the continuity mode. Place the probes on the TCO's leads-it should read as a very low resistance (<1 Ohm) when intact. An open circuit (infinite resistance) indicates the device has tripped and cannot be reset.
If you discover a blown TCO, don't simply replace it: confirm there wasn't an underlying fault (blocked fan, shorted component, or external heat source). Investigate vents, fan operation, board discoloration, and suspect semiconductors (rectifiers, MOSFETs).
Case: Power supply for a 3D printer (Melco/Anet) fails after a hot day in Johannesburg. Opening the enclosure, the TCO reads open, but the AC fuse and wiring test fine. Visual check finds the intake fan jammed with filament dust. After thoroughly cleaning and sourcing a correct replacement TCO (e.g., 135 degreesC, same current rating), the machine is restored-along with improved maintenance steps.
