Each type has unique parameters to test: thermal resistance ( degreesC/W) for heatsinks, airflow (CFM) and noise for fans, and contact effectiveness for pads/compounds. Thermal resistance, measured in degreesC/W, quantifies how effectively a heatsink transfers heat away from a device. Lower values mean better cooling efficiency. Always cross-reference your calculated results with data sheets and observe actual touch temperatures (carefully!) to validate against device maximum ratings. At higher altitudes within Gauteng, note that air cooling efficiency may drop, impacting maximum allowable power dissipation.
To test fan performance, measure the supplied voltage/current (using your DMM), listen for abnormal noise, and check airflow with a handheld anemometer. For South African hobbyists and students, typical 12 V or 24 V fans can be powered from bench supplies-ensure stable voltage, as lower line voltages may reduce fan speed and cooling capacity.
Thermal interface materials (pads and pastes) are tested by applying them per manufacturer's instructions, then conducting a heating/cooling cycle while monitoring temperature drop versus a dry test. Uneven mounting or excessive thickness generally increases thermal resistance and reduces effectiveness.
