Choosing the right thermal management device-heatsink, fan, thermal pad, heat pipe, or thermoelectric cooler-helps prevent thermal throttling, extends component life, and keeps prototypes reliable. Peltier modules actively pump heat and are suited to temperature-controlled experiments or small refrigeration projects. They can be inefficient for continuous high-power cooling and require good heat rejection on the hot side.
Thermal selection relies on a few repeatable calculations. The primary relationship is:
Delta T = P x Rth_total
Where Delta T is the temperature rise above ambient (°C), P is power dissipated (W), and Rth_total is the total thermal resistance from junction to ambient (°C/W).
Break Rth_total into components:
Example formula usage: If a regulator dissipates 3.5 W, and you need junction temperature to remain within 25°C above ambient, the allowable Rth_total = 25 / 3.5 = 7.14 °C/W. Subtract Rth_jc (from datasheet) and Rth_interface to derive required Rth_ca from your heatsink.

You have a linear regulator that dissipates 4 W. The datasheet lists Rth_jc = 5 °C/W and you want junction no more than 20°C above ambient. Rth_total allowed = 20 / 4 = 5 °C/W. If a thermal pad gives Rth_interface ~0.5 °C/W, required Rth_ca = 5 - 5 - 0.5 = -0.5 °C/W, which is impossible-this shows a heatsink alone won’t suffice and you need active cooling, lower power dissipation, or a different regulator topology (e.g., switching regulator) to reduce heat.
- Form factor: ensure heatsink mounting accommodates package type (TO-220, DPAK, SOT-223).
