A CPU generates intense heat during operation. Applying thermal paste (also known as thermal grease or compound) between the processor and its heatsink ensures maximum surface contact, greatly improving heat conduction. Without it, microscopic gaps can trap air, reducing cooling efficiency and risking CPU throttling or premature failure.

An often-repeated mistake is using too much or too little thermal compound. Ideally, use a grain-of-rice or small pea-sized amount (about 3-5mm diameter) for standard desktop CPUs. This enables even spread without overspill, reducing mess and electrical risk.
Some larger CPUs (such as workstation or server types) may benefit from a short thin line or several smaller dots - always refer to the manufacturer or datasheet for large or unusual dies.
