The Sonoff T2 is a wall-mounted touch switch family that combines WiFi control, RF remote support and capacitive touch buttons. Models are available in single-, double- and triple-gang formats and are widely used to retrofit lamps, ceiling lights and other AC loads for smart control. This guide focuses on safe wiring, basic configuration using the eWeLink app (or local alternatives), and South Africa-specific installation notes.
Only attempt mains wiring if you are a qualified electrician or comfortable with live work. Isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and verify with a voltage tester. If in doubt, contact a licensed electrician and keep installations compliant with local wiring practices.

Confirm the label on your Sonoff device for exact load ratings. For lighting circuits with incandescent, LED or CFL lamps, total current depends on lamp wattage: use I = P / V. For example, 10 × 9W LED lamps at 230V draw approximately I = 90W / 230V ? 0.39 A.

Identify the live (L), neutral (N) and switched live (load out) conductors in your existing switch box. Many South African lighting circuits use 1 mm2 or 1.5 mm2 wiring; ensure the Sonoff's terminals accept your conductor size. Some Sonoff T2 versions require a neutral; if your switch box lacks a neutral, use a neutral-optional model or have an electrician run a neutral to the box.

If replacing an existing mechanical switch, label wires then disconnect. Use the multimeter to verify the live conductor only after the circuit is isolated and then restored for testing by a qualified person.

Turn off the circuit at the consumer unit. Verify isolation with a non-contact tester. Remove the faceplate screws and gently extract the old switch to expose the wiring. Take clear photos or mark wires for reference.
Strip conductors ~6-8 mm, insert into the correct terminals and tighten the captive screws. Ensure no stray strands are present. Re-check that the neutral, live and load are not shorted. Restore power briefly to confirm correct wiring if you are qualified to do so; otherwise, have an electrician test and enable the device.
Install the eWeLink app and follow pairing instructions-usually putting the device into pairing mode by touching the capacitive area as described in the Sonoff guide. Sonoff T2 typically uses 2.4 GHz WiFi; ensure your phone is on the same network. RF pairing (for supported remotes) is done by pressing the remote button while the switch is in learning mode.
You can control the T2 via the app, schedule timers, or integrate with local home automation hubs that support Sonoff devices (check compatibility for your chosen firmware or cloud setup). For offline or local control options, research community firmware and be aware of warranty or support implications.
If you have 12 × 8W LED downlights on one circuit: total P = 96 W. Current I = P / V = 96 W / 230 V ? 0.42 A. This is within typical Sonoff lighting limits, but always check the device label. For inrush-prone loads (transformers, motors), account for higher peak currents.
The Sonoff T2 has a slim profile to fit standard wall boxes, but confirm depth before installation. Route wires neatly and avoid pinching when replacing the faceplate. If your backbox is crowded, consider a shallow mounting box extension or relocation by a professional.
