Black nail-on insulators are a common choice for single-wire and multi-wire electric fencing where wooden posts or rails are used. They secure the live conductor, provide consistent clearance from the post, and reduce leakage or shorting to timber. This guide covers tools, materials, positioning, wiring basics, and South African considerations like stock availability and collection at local branches.
Choose an insulator rated for the conductor type and intended mounting. For steel plain wire use smaller-hoop insulators; for polywire and tape use larger-slot or clip designs to avoid cutting the material. Verify the insulator's clearance from the post (typically 12-25 mm for wood) so arcing and tracking are minimised. For livestock fences: place insulators at roughly 120-150 mm vertical spacing for wires near each other (e.g., cattle) and 200-250 mm for larger animals or horses. Adjust spacing based on behaviour and terrain. These are practical guidelines; adjust to your specific layout.
Measure and mark each post where an insulator will be fitted. Use a chalk line or meter for long runs to keep consistent height. For corners and strainers, place insulators slightly offset to allow straight wire alignment and easier tensioning.
Drive the insulator nail or screw into the timber at a slight upward angle to help retain the conductor. For large numbers of insulators, a battery screwdriver with a suitable driver bit speeds installation and reduces fatigue. Ensure the insulator head is flush and the contact slot faces the direction of the run.
For wire: open the slot or loop the wire through the hoop and lay it in the insulator. For tape/polywire: pass the tape through the wider slot so it sits flat without twisting. Maintain a small gap between the conductor and post; the insulator should prevent any rubbing against timber to reduce leakage.
Use a tensioning strainer at the end of each run. Typical tension for high-tensile wire ranges between 300-600 N depending on span and post spacing. For polywire, keep tension lower to avoid stretching. Use crimp sleeves or approved clamps for joins and dead-ends; never knot plain wire without correct hardware.
