Every active electronic device generates heat during operation. Effective heat dissipation is vital to prevent thermal damage, component derating, or reliability issues-especially with compact PCB designs, power modules, or high-frequency ICs. From prototyping Arduino-based projects to deploying industrial control panels, South African makers and engineers face unique challenges: ambient temperatures, enclosure space, and access to thermal management parts.
Below 85 degreesC (ambient + self-heating) is typically targeted for most consumer and industrial ICs. Beyond this, derating or instability may occur. For South Africa, summertime workshops may start above 30 degreesC, narrowing headroom for heat dissipation-so right-sizing cooling is crucial.
