This guide explains how to identify faulty thermal components commonly used in electronics: heatsinks, thermal pads/paste, thermistors, temperature sensors (NTC/PTC, digital ICs), and thermal fuses. Identifying faults early prevents overheating failures in prototypes, test rigs and production equipment. The procedures below assume access to basic tools: a multimeter, infrared thermometer or thermal camera (if available), and a soldering iron or component extraction tools.
When replacing thermal components in South Africa, consider local stock and lead times. Recommended tools: a good multimeter (with resistance and diode modes), clamp meter for current checks, an infrared thermometer or thermal camera for hot-spot detection, and a bench power supply for controlled tests. Start with a visual check: look for burn marks, cracked ceramic thermistor beads, bent fins on heatsinks, dried or uneven thermal paste, and loose mounting screws. Mechanical issues like a loose heatsink or missing thermal pad are common causes of poor thermal performance.
Measure resistance at room temperature. For NTC thermistors, resistance should decrease with temperature; for PTC it increases. Compare measured values to the component datasheet where possible. You can find many sensor parts and brand options in the Shop by Brand.

Use Ohm’s law and power formulas to estimate heating. Key formulas:
V = I × R | P = V × I | P = I^2 × R
Example: a linear regulator drops 5 V at 0.5 A. Power dissipated is P = 5 V × 0.5 A = 2.5 W. If the heatsink thermal resistance is 10 °C/W, expect a temperature rise of ~25 °C above ambient. If measured delta-T is much higher, suspect a failed thermal interface or incorrect heatsink mounting.
An infrared thermometer gives spot checks; a thermal camera exposes hot spots across a board. When you detect unexpectedly high temperatures, isolate the circuit and run controlled tests, monitoring current and voltage. Use a series resistor and ADC or multimeter to monitor sensor response in-circuit. If readings are erratic, remove the sensor and bench-test it to rule out board-level issues.
