T_j = T_a + P x (_jc + _cs + _sa)
For simple setups, _ja (junction-to-ambient) is sometimes given.
Heatsink selection: Rearrange to solve for _sa based on your component's safe T_j and design ambient.

Formula Example: If P=5W, _jc=2 degreesC/W, _cs=1 degreesC/W, _sa=8 degreesC/W, T_a=30 degreesC: T_j=30+(5x(2+1+8))=85 degreesC.

Selection Criteria: From Heatsinks to Active Cooling

Consider these factors when choosing heatsinks and cooling strategies-especially for power devices, voltage regulators, and processors:

Component physical size and mounting footprint
Maximum expected power dissipation across all operating modes
Ambient temperature, including inside enclosures
Product lifetime and reliability targets
Available space and airflow (forced vs. natural convection)
Type of interface material (thermal paste, pads; pre-cut shapes stocked locally)
Noise or vibration limitations (fans vs. passive solutions)

With T_j,max=125 degreesC and ambient at 30 degreesC, and _jc=2 degreesC/W, _cs=0.5 degreesC/W, solve for the maximum allowable _sa:

T = T_j,max - T_a = 125 - 30 = 95 degreesC
Sum of fixed resistances = _jc + _cs = 2 + 0.5 = 2.5 degreesC/W
Max _sa = [T / P] - _jc - _cs = (95/13) - 2.5 = 7.3 - 2.5 = 4.8 degreesC/W

Example 2: Microcontroller in Plastic Enclosure

A mid-power MCU draws 500mA at 3.3V, with _ja=50 degreesC/W. Heat dissipated: P = 0.5A x 3.3V = 1.65W. Ambient inside the enclosure could rise to 40 degreesC. Max T_j is typically 105 degreesC.

T = P x _ja = 1.65 x 50 = 82.5 degreesC
T_j = T_a + T = 40 + 82.5 = 122.5 degreesC -> Exceeds rating!

To fix: Improve airflow with vents or add a small fan. Even a low-flow fan (see Fans & Blowers) can reduce _ja significantly.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Heatsink too small? Device or case uncomfortably hot in use-measure temperatures with a digital thermometer or IR camera.
Hot spots in enclosures? Increase ventilation, use thermally conductive pads between device and housing, or re-orient for better convection.
