Three thermal properties are used often in component datasheets: thermal resistance (Rth, °C/W), maximum junction or case temperature (Tj or Tc), and power dissipation (P, W). Thermal resistance tells you how many degrees the component will rise per watt of heat. Lower Rth is better for heat conduction.

Use these relations when you need a quick estimate. For steady-state temperature rise:
Delta T = P x Rth (where Delta T is °C rise above ambient, P is watts dissipated, and Rth is °C/W)
Example: a regulator dissipating 2 W mounted to a heatsink with Rth_ha = 10 °C/W gives Delta T = 2 x 10 = 20 °C above ambient.
When calculating power from voltage and current: P = V x I. For resistor heating, use P = I^2 x R or P = V^2 / R as appropriate.

Example 1 - Linear regulator on a small PCB: Suppose a linear regulator drops 5 V at 0.2 A (P = V x I = 1 W). If ambient is 30 °C and the regulator's max junction is 125 °C, you need an assembly with total Rth (junction-to-ambient) less than (125 - 30) / 1 = 95 °C/W. In practice, pick a heatsink or board layout that gives much lower Rth for reliability-typically under 30 °C/W for a tidy margin.
Example 2 - High-power MOSFET: A MOSFET dissipating 10 W using a heatsink with Rth_ha = 4 °C/W yields Delta T = 40 °C. With 35 °C ambient, the case will be ~75 °C. Confirm this is acceptable in the device datasheet and consider adding a fan or larger heatsink if more headroom is required.

Use insulating washers or thermal pads when mounting to electrically live package tabs. Thermal pad thickness and hardness affect contact area-thinner usually decreases thermal resistance but is less forgiving of uneven surfaces.
Select fans by required airflow (CFM) and static pressure for constrained spaces. Higher RPM increases cooling but also noise and power draw. For hobby and education environments, aim for low-noise axial fans with sufficient CFM; for enclosure cooling, consider blowers if static pressure is needed.
