All UTP cable is marked with the category (e.g., "Cat6"), AWG (thickness), flame rating (CM, CMR, LSZH), and maximum supported length. Choose stranded cores for patch cables and solid core for in-wall structured cabling. In high-interference areas (e.g., factories with heavy motors), consider shielded alternatives, though for most educational and office projects, unshielded is preferred for flexibility and price.

Always store bulk cable in dry conditions, protected from direct sunlight, and avoid excessive pulling. Allow 10-15% extra length for corners and routing on-site. The standard maximum length for a single UTP Ethernet segment is 100 metres. Exceeding this may cause signal degradation, especially at Gigabit (1000Base-T) speeds.
