Heatsinks play a key role in keeping semiconductors, regulators, power transistors, and LEDs operating safely. A well-chosen heatsink dissipates excess heat, boosting reliability and lifespan-vital for everything from single-board projects to industrial controls. In South Africa's climate, where summer lab temps can climb past 30 degreesC, managing device temperatures is even more crucial.
A heatsink is a thermal management component, typically made from aluminium or copper, that absorbs and disperses heat from active devices into the surrounding air. Larger surface area and airflow increase heat dissipation. Heatsinks are widely used with TO220/TO247 transistors, D2PAK regulators, high-power resistors, CPUs, and LEDs.
The main parameter for selecting a heatsink is thermal resistance ( degreesC/W). This value measures how well the heatsink transfers heat from the component to the ambient air-a lower value means better performance.

Example: Sizing a heatsink for a TO220 regulator dissipating 6W. Assume Tj,max = 125 degreesC, Ta,max = 35 degreesC, Rjc = 3 degreesC/W, Rcs = 1 degreesC/W.
So, for continuous 6W dissipation at 35 degreesC, select a heatsink rated no higher than 11 degreesC/W.
