If you’ve ever opened a light switch in a house built before 1990 in Pretoria or Cape Town, you’ve likely seen the problem: only two wires - live and switched live - with no neutral in the back box. Traditional smart switches need a neutral to power their internal electronics, which is why so many retrofit projects stall. The Sonoff ZBMINIR2 is designed to work precisely in this scenario, using a bypass or a clever wiring method that we’ll unpack here.
This guide focuses specifically on the wiring differences and setup with no-neutral scenarios - not a generic “how to connect a switch” tutorial. We’ll cover the two main approaches, compare them, and give you a decision framework based on your actual load type (LED vs. incandescent vs. ceiling fan). The ZBMINIR2 is a compact relay module that sits behind your existing wall switch. It has several screw terminals, and it’s critical to identify them correctly. The terminals are usually labeled on the PCB or the housing, and following best practices for wiring this switch is essential.
For a no-neutral setup, you will not use the N terminal. Instead, the ZBMINIR2 relies on a small current flowing through the load (the light) to power itself. That’s why the type of load matters - as we’ll see later.
When you don’t have a neutral at the switch, but you do have one at the light fixture, the most reliable method is to use the Sonoff ZBMINI Bypass module. The bypass is installed in parallel with the light, typically inside the ceiling rose box. It provides the necessary power path for the ZBMINIR2 when the light is off.
This is the recommended method for LED and low-wattage bulbs, because LEDs have a very low standby current draw, which can be insufficient to power the relay. The bypass effectively creates a small load that keeps the relay happy.
The bypass method is the most stable because it ensures a consistent power supply to the relay. However, it requires access to the ceiling rose, which can be tricky in some installations. Also, you need to buy a bypass module separately (it’s relatively inexpensive).
In some cases, particularly with higher-wattage incandescent or halogen bulbs, the ZBMINIR2 might work without a bypass, because the filament provides enough natural impedance. But with modern LED bulbs, it often fails - you might experience flickering, or the relay might not switch at all. This method is not reliable for LEDs.
If you’re tempted to skip the bypass, a rule of thumb is: if the total load is below 5W, you’ll definitely need a bypass. Between 5W and 20W, it’s a gamble. Above 20W with incandescent, your chances improve, but it’s still not recommended because power supply fluctuations can cause issues.

The ZBMINIR2 is rated to switch loads up to a certain wattage (check the latest datasheet - often ~2500W for resistive, but much lower for LED due to inrush currents). In South Africa, we have a mix of old and new wiring, and our mains voltage is 230V. Here’s a decision table for no-neutral scenarios:

If you have a ceiling fan with a pull-chain speed switch and want to automate its on/off, the ZBMINIR2 can be used as a simple relay, but you must ensure the fan is off at the pull switch to avoid unexpected starts. Always check the fan’s current draw - the ZBMINIR2’s relay is rated for a certain current (e.g., 10A), but inductive loads cause voltage spikes, so adding a snubber (RC suppressor) is advisable - though not included with the device.
South African homes, especially those with staircases or long passages, often have two-way switching. The ZBMINIR2 supports a maximum of two traditional switches wired to S1 and S2, but what if you have three or four switch positions? That’s where an intermediate switch comes in - which is not directly supported by the ZBMINIR2’s two terminals.
The ZBMINIR2 itself can replace a traditional two-way setup by connecting a single switch (SPST) between S1 and S2. If you have an intermediate switch (four-terminal) in the middle of a circuit, you can’t wire it directly. Instead, you have two options:
Our advice: If you need multiple physical location control, consider using a Sonoff Zigbee wall switch model that specifically supports two-way and even three-way configurations via a companion switch, or explore compatibility with smart home systems. The ZBMINIR2 is best for single or double location control.

Now let’s get hands-on. We’ll assume a typical no-neutral scenario with a single wall switch. This is the most common setup in older homes in areas like Sunnyside, Pretoria, or Gardens, Cape Town.

The ZBMINIR2 is a Zigbee 3.0 device. In South Africa, common hubs include Amazon Echo Plus, Hubitat, or Sonoff’s own Zigbee bridge (ZBBridge). To pair:
This is the #1 symptom when no bypass is used with LED bulbs. The relay is drawing power through the LED, causing a small current to flow even when “off”. Solution: Add the bypass module. Alternatively, check if the LED driver is compatible - some cheap drivers cause this.
This usually means the relay isn’t getting enough current. If you haven’t used a bypass, try adding one. Also verify that L and L1 are not swapped - if you accidentally swapped live and switched live, the relay may not power up correctly.
Check the wires connected to S1 and S2. They should be from a single-pole, single-throw (SPST) switch - not a dimmer! Dimmer switches are not compatible with the ZBMINIR2. If you have a two-way setup, see our earlier section on that.
Move the hub closer to the device during pairing. South African homes often have thick walls - Zigbee signal may struggle. Also, ensure your hub is compatible with Zigbee 3.0 and that the device is in pairing mode. Sometimes toggling the physical switch rapidly (on-off-on-off) triggers pairing - check the official manual.

LED bulbs and electronic transformers have a high inrush current when switched on, which can be several times the steady-state current. The relay contact in the ZBMINIR2 is rated for a certain maximum, but for longevity, it’s wise to keep the total LED wattage well below the rated load. For example, if the relay is rated 10A (2300W resistive), the maximum capacitive load might be only 200V. Check the datasheet for the exact derating.
The ZBMINIR2 is a versatile and compact relay that is one of the most reliable options for no-neutral installations if you use a bypass. It’s not perfect for every scenario - particularly complex multi-way switching - but for a single location, it’s hard to beat. If you need more features like power monitoring or a wall switch with no-neutral built-in, you might want to look at other Sonoff models.
