Suppose you have a linear regulator dissipating 2 Watt with a datasheet maximum of 125 degreesC. Ambient in your enclosure is expected to reach 40 degreesC.
Required heat sink resistance:ΘSA = (125 - 40) / 2 - (3 + 1) = 85 / 2 - 4 = 42.5 - 4 = 38.5 degreesC/W
